FORT BLISS, Texas— Soldiers and spouses attended a ScreamFree Marriage seminar, June 12, at the Family Resiliency Center, here, presented by Hal Runkel, bestselling author and founder and president of the ScreamFree Institute in Atlanta, Ga.
The Fort Bliss Army Community Service regularly offer seminars and classes like the ScreamFree Marriage program to the local military community to help combat the added stresses associated with being a military family.
Runkel authored the bestselling books “ScreamFree Marriage,” “ScreamFree Parenting,” and “The Self-Centered Marriage,” all of which are promoted and taught by his institute.
The ScreamFree Marriage program was started in February 2011 with the publishing of the “ScreamFree Marriage” book, which focuses on the mantra of “Calming Down, Growing Up, and Getting Closer.”
“Relationships are conflicts,” said Runkel. “The key to these conflicts is that if at least one person can stay calm, the conversations or arguments have a chance to go into a positive direction that can actually strengthen the relationship instead of breaking it apart.”
In addition to staying calm, the program also focuses on the fact that people can scream in many different ways and none of them have to be loud.
“I know we have all been either the victim of a silent treatment from our spouse or the transgressor,” said Runkel. “The silent treatment is just a passive-aggressive way to scream and until we recognize it as screaming, we can’t stop it.”
“If your marriage is on the rocks, programs like ScreamFree Marriage can give you tools to help fix it,” said Sgt. 1st Class Marcus Moore, a platoon sergeant with 3rd Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, here, who attended the seminar with his wife. “Why not take advantage of that?”
“If your marriage is strong I would still recommend you attend ScreamFree marriage classes because this course can only make your marriage stronger and strong marriages are definitely needed in today’s Army,” said Moore.
Moore also noted that he proudly participates in marriage strengthening programs with his wife on a regular basis even though he believes their marriage is strong.
The ScreamFree Institute got its start from the “ScreamFree Parenting” book that was first published 10 years ago and distributed worldwide. Three years later the institute was contracted by the Army to offer a slightly modified version of its programs to fit the military family and its unique issues when compared to the civilian population.
Since then Army Community Service has offered ScreamFree programs locally to active or retired soldiers and their family members. This is in addition to ACS’s many programs and services offered for the benefit of the military community.
While visiting Fort Bliss, personnel from the institute also held a two-day class that started June 11, where they trained 17 new ScreamFree Marriage course facilitators. This will allow the post to hold its own ScreamFree Marriage courses in addition to the ScreamFree Parenting courses it already offers.
