    U.S. Army Reserve Command

FORT MCCOY, Wis. – “I really didn’t set any goals before joining the military, but now that I have joined, it’s opened up a whole different world for me,” said Sgt. Eric Jobb, a Richmond, Va., native and member of the 11th Aviation Command.

For some soldiers, the Army Reserve is used as a stepping stone in life for a better career, the chance to get an education, or even the opportunity to enhance their physical fitness and mental agility.

Jobb, who’s been in the reserve four years, said that before joining the Army, he was jumping from job to job with no real purpose or goals for his life. He then made the decision to join and see where the Army took him.

“Before I actually joined, I didn’t really have any direction whatsoever. I had no idea,” he said. “I was kind of in a tight spot in my life and that is when I decided to join. I didn’t really have a career focus. I didn’t really have a foundation. I am not going to say the military did all of that, but it certainly helped me get in the right direction and plant my feet because it was a rocky road, but now, it’s good.”

Although his military job is a motor transport operator, Jobb has been on active duty operational support orders and has been trained as a Chinook fueler. Jobb said he was recently selected to fill an active Guard reserve position and has also been working towards earning his associate’s degree in the near future.

“I am going to school for human resource management,” he said. “As erratic and changing as [my life] is, that’s a really bold move for me and I’ve made it, and I am doing well; so it’s a great achievement.”

Jobb said going to school for human resources was not his first choice, but thinks he may stick with it now because the salary pays well. Along with the Army and going to school, Jobb is also a husband and father of three children.

“With three kids and being young, it’s a little difficult because I have to balance everything,” he said. “College, going away for the [Army]; it’s really tough. It’s really, really tough.”

Jobb said his wife has been supportive throughout everything and although he finds it hard to juggle everything at times, he said the pressure and tension help push him forward towards his goals instead of holding him back.

“I have also been promoted to E-5, [that, and going to school] are two major goals after joining the military that I saw for myself so I have made a lot of progression,” he said. “I won Best Warrior Competition [at his command level] and enhanced all areas of my life, really.”

Describing himself as a hardworking family man, Jobb said he wants people to see the difference between where he was, jumping from job to job; to where he is now, in the Army Reserve with a full-time position, going to school and enjoying his family. Jobb is currently competing for the 2013 Army Reserve Best Warrior.
