NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. - No army could function without the skills of their mechanics that are trained to fix any vehicles the unit uses to complete their mission.

Soldiers from the 824th Quartermaster Company based at Fort Bragg, are here at Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Susquehanna, for their annual training, assisting the DLA employees in the motor pool with maintenance.

The DLA operates a large array of semitrailers, cars, and vans used for shipping military equipment and supplies. Keeping these vehicles up and running is an enormous task for the mechanics.

Spc. Magda Matthews, of Fayetteville, N.C., a wheeled vehicle mechanic, and Spc. Steven Volker, of Raleigh, N.C., a power generation equipment repairer jumped on the opportunity to get their hands dirty working on vehicles.

“We are helping to maintain the vehicles and do anything that needs to be done, from preventive maintenance, to changing oil and tires,” said Matthews“We are following the unit’s motto ‘Being the keystone of mobility.’”

There is little room for error, so safety is paramount. They practice proper safety measures every work day.

“We are following the DLA’s guideline for safety by wearing personal protective equipment like white protective overalls, gloves, earplugs and protective glasses,” Volker said.
This training will keep these soldiers better trained and better prepared for future deployments.

The mechanics use this knowledge at home in their personal lives.

“I change my own oil and inspect my brakes,” Matthews said. “I work on the engine whenever I can.”

Although the 824th is here for only two weeks, they will be leaving supplied with knowledge and ideas that better prepares them for any future missions or deployments.
