CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Lt. Col. Brian E. Russell relieved Lt. Col. Brian T. Bruggeman as the commanding officer of 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO), during a change of command ceremony at Camp Pendleton, Calif., June 27.
During the ceremony, Bruggeman passed the ANGLICO guidon to Russell, signifying his relinquishing of command and Russell’s new responsibilities.
Col. James H. Herrera, commanding officer of I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group was first to speak, honoring an imminent relationship with Russell.
“I look forward to working with you,” Herrera said. “And I know you will continue to do some great things.”
Bruggeman spoke of the leadership that had mentored him for over two years and the bittersweet feeling with leaving 1st ANGLICO.
“The honor and humbleness that I feel today goes way more than I ever felt when I first took command,” Bruggeman said. “It’s incredible how intense those feelings are today.”
“I will miss you greatly. Thank you for everything you’ve done for yourselves, for the Marine to your left and your right, for I MEF [Marine Expeditionary Force], for Marybeth [Wife] and myself. 1st ANGLICO, I love you, and I will miss you,” Bruggeman said, handing the microphone to the new commander.
Russell said he’d keep the deference that comes with being the ‘new Nick on the block’ by keeping his speech short.
“To those Marines and sailors out there you look sharp today,” Russell said. “That absolutely fits your reputation…and it’s an honor to serve with you.”
Bruggeman was selected to attend The Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy in Washington, D.C. for the 2013-14 academic year.
