CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Two people were rescued from a burning sport fishing boat by a Customs and Border Protection boat crew who discovered the boat on fire at approximately 11:40 a.m. Friday, just off of the shores of Lydia Ann Island.
The crew aboard the CBP Intercepter class boat rescued them from the 46-foot boat, Wired, and brought them to Coast Guard Station Port Aransas. The Coast Guard has a 100-yard safety zone in place around the boat and will continue to monitor the situation in coordination with the Texas General Land Office.
"We are expecting to see a lot of boaters heading out this weekend," said Lt. Patrick Marshall, the response officer at Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi. "Take the time to provide a thorough inspection of your vessel before heading out. Spending an extra few minutes looking for unsafe conditions can save your boat and protect your crew. No matter what the emergency though, ensuring everyone on board has their life preservers should always be a first step. We were very glad that these folks were already wearing their life preservers and were ready. While you are out on the water this weekend, have fun but be safe."
The Coast Guard reminds all mariners to do the following before heading out on the water:
• Wear a life jacket at all times
• File a float plan
• Check the weather prior to departing the dock
• Have a marine band radio and visual distress signals on board
• Have a registered 406MHz Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon
• Have a Personal Locator Beacon
• Do not boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
