FORT HOOD, Texas - The 85th Civil Affairs Brigade conducted a change of command ceremony with Col. David P. Mauser assuming command from Col. Leo J. Ruth II at the flag pole in front of III Corps, here June 27.
Brig. Gen. Joseph M. Martin, deputy commanding general-support, 1st Cavalry Division, presided over the ceremony and thanked Ruth for his hard work and dedication over the past couple of years laying the foundation for the brigade first stood up in 2011. He also welcomed Col. Mauser and his family to the brigade and Fort Hood area.
“Simply put, the 85th Civil Affairs Brigade has performed in remarkable fashion under Col. Leo Ruth and has chartered the path for this brigade forward,” said Brig. Gen. Martin.
Since the brigade activated, three subordinate battalions have since stood up, namely the 81st, 82nd and 83rd with the 80th and 84th set to activate later this year. Along with activating, Warrior Diplomats have already completed deployments to Afghanistan as well as joint training missions to the countries of Jordan, Georgia and Macedonia.
“The soldiers standing in front of you today possess four characteristics that well help them maintain the trust and confidence of the American people,” said Col. Ruth. “Honorable service, a commitment to excellence, competence in their profession and lastly possession of high character. As we move forward, these characteristics will enable us to maintain our stature as U.S. Army Forces Command’s premier civil affairs force.”
For the incoming commander, taking over on June 27 was very significant in that it was also the Martin’s 21st wedding anniversary.
“Chris, I want to thank you for the support you provided me over the last 21 years, you have taken care of the home front and allowed me to focus on my mission, said Col. Martin. “Thank you for being my best friend and my rock.”
"To the soldiers of the 85th, As your new commander I have one focus and that is combat readiness Our job is to win the wars that our nation calls us to fight and I look forward to serving with you in those efforts.”
Col. Mauser comes to Fort Hood with a wealth of civil affairs knowledge with his most recent assignment as the deputy director Village Stability National Coordination Center for the Combined Forces Special Operations Component Command-Afghanistan. Previous to that assignment he was the deputy commander for the 95th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C.
The 85th Civil Affairs Brigade is the first active duty civil affairs brigade for Forces Command. The brigade, made up of five regionally aligned battalions, will bear the responsibility of supporting conventional forces in garrison and while deployed.
