VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Seven sailors from Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 12 were honored at an awards ceremony held at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, June 27.
Lt. Andrew W. Cassity and explosive ordnance disposal technicians 1st Class Jacob D. Miller and Matthew J. Wheeler were awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician 2nd Class Larry Brown was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician 2nd Class Kyle J. Masur was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat "V," Chief Yeoman Chanreka Leftridge was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician 1st Class Daniel R. Swartzel was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
"Recognizing our sailors highlights their accomplishments from all phases of the mission," said Capt. Tim Rudderow, commander of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 2. "Their pre-deployment training is critical, and so is operational support when downrange, to ensure their success in combat operations."
Cassity and Wheeler were awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy while serving as an explosive ordnance disposal platoon commander and leading petty officer, respectively, while assigned to a Joint Task Force from Oct. 15, 2012 to Feb. 20, 2013.
Miller was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service while serving with the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force from July 31, 2011 to Feb. 15, 2012.
Brown was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for meritorious service as an instructor at Instructor Core Division Underwater Ordnance Division, Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Eckley Air Force Base from Feb. 2010 to May 2013.
Masur was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat "V" for heroic achievement while serving as lead communications Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician for Trident 2011 from March 2011 to Feb. 2012.
Leftridge was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for meritorious service while serving as a Security Force Assistance Echo Platoon Chief Petty Officer for Maritime Civil Affairs Security Training Command from March 2011 to June 2013.
Swartzel was awarded Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for professional achievement and the superior performance of his duties while serving as a Readiness and Training Department trainer at EODMU 12 from Oct. 10, 2012 to May 13, 2013.
"I think it's nice for the junior guys to see that if you perform well you do get recognized," said Miller who has served with EOD since 2005. "It gives those guys something to aspire to for their upcoming deployments."
U.S. Navy EOD is the world's premier combat force for countering explosive hazards and conducting expeditionary diving and salvage operations for the location, identification, rendering safe, recovery, field evaluation and disposal of all explosive ordnance, including chemical and nuclear weapons.
