NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY, Bahrain – Commander, Mine Countermeasures Squadron (MCMRON) 5, Task Force (CTF) 52, held a change of command ceremony on board RFA Cardigan Bay (L3009) July 11.
Capt. Richard Hayes relieved Capt. Glenn Allen as the director of mine warfare operations in U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. CTF 52 and its staff are instrumental to the continuous protection of sea lines of communication, the deterrence of disruptive countries and the strengthening of regional partner maritime capabilities to promote a secure maritime environment. MCMRON 5 focuses specifically on clearing mines to keep sea lanes open for military and commercial traffic.
“Under Glenn’s command, 5th Fleet’s mine countermeasures forces consistently performed at peak levels under challenging conditions in support of navy, joint, and multi-national tasking,” said Commander, Naval Forces Central Command, U.S. 5th Fleet, Combined Maritime Forces, Vice Adm. John Miller. “Captain Allen, you are a masterful teacher and team-builder, who has promoted an ethos and spirit of teamwork across your entire force.”
Allen gave parting words to the task force after receiving the Legion of Merit from Miller.
“It’s been a journey of miles, of course, but it’s been a journey of mind and spirit as well,” said Allen. “I’m proud of each and every one of you and the sacrifices you’ve made in the name of the mission and thank you all for your unfailing commitment to the task at hand.”
With a salute, Allen turned over command of MCMRON5/CTF 52 to Hayes, who greeted his staff as commanding officer for the first time.
“I’m honored to be a part of CTF 52 and to work alongside all the other units and task forces in this AOR,” said Hayes. “This is a busy part of the world, and I’m ready to get started.”
MCMRON 5/CTF 52 oversees all mine countermeasures assets in the U.S. 5th Fleet AOR, which include mine countermeasures ships USS Scout (MCM 8), USS Gladiator (MCM 11), USS Ardent (MCM 12) and USS Dextrous (MCM 13), and Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 15, Detachment 2.
