FORT STEWART, Ga. - In the middle of two large four-story buildings which sit inside of the triangle of Hase Road, East Ninth Street and French Road is a snazzy new three-story 27, 470 square foot building that will serve as the Warrior Transition Battalion headquarters building and house about 170 military and Civilian staff.
The three buildings, with the Soldier and Family Assistance Center, make up the four-building footprint of the Fort Stewart Wounded Warrior campus.
On July 2, post leaders joined the commanders from the WTB and Winn Army Community Hospital at the new building for a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The opening of the headquarters building completes the construction project that began in 2009. The three-phased project included the addition of the SFAC building in 2009, two four-story barracks, which opened in 2012 and now the headquarters building.
“This ribbon cutting signifies one more step in the Army’s commitment to soldier care," Winn Commander Col. Ronald Place said. "We are here to recognize the tangible efforts that have gone to providing an outstanding facility to support both mission command along with medical managements to the wounded, ill, and injured soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division.
The headquarters building will also house medical and administrative support personnel and serve as the heart of the battalion where 95 percent of the daily operations to support soldiers in transition take place.
“This battalion headquarters opening today is the finishing touch in the step of showing what a great nation we are. This is the crown jewel and the finishing touch of the battalion,” said WTB Commander Lt. Col. Rose Deck.
Deck commands a headquarters company and companies A and B. They were previously located across the street in multiple temporary buildings in the midst of the Georgia Garrison Training Center.
“This brings us all in one building and close together,” Deck said.
Deck said having everyone in one building makes it quick and easy to make contact with people within the organization.
Currently, the WTB includes more than 500 soldiers in Transition covering the tri-state area of Georgia, Florida and South Carolina and consists of all components of the Army.
