FORT STEWART, Ga. - Over the past two years, under the command of Col. Ronald Place, the Fort Stewart Medical Department Activity has seen several accomplished initiatives and the start of two expansion phases at the Winn Army Community Hospital.
On July 8, Place handed those accomplishments and the task of overseeing the completion of the hospital expansions to Col. Kirk Eggleston during a change of command ceremony held at Cottrell Field.
Eggleston comes to Fort Stewart as the new MEDDAC commander after attending the College of Naval Warfare in Newport, R.I. Before that, he was the commander at General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital at Fort Leonardwood, Mo.
“I agree with him [Col. Place], never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be changing commands here at Fort Stewart,” said Eggleston, an Iowa native who was commissioned in the Army in 1990. “We have a mission to continue, Col. Place and
his team have done an outstanding job.”
This is not the first time he and Place crossed paths. They served together in the same platoon in ROTC Advance Camp in 1985 at Fort Lewis, Wash.
“I could not be more pleased that the Army chose you to lead this MEDDAC,” Place said.
Under Place’s command, the accomplishments at the MEDDAC includes the doubling of behavior services with a new behavioral health facility; building an embedded behavioral health program; the beginning of phase one and two expansions of Winn that will bring state-of-the-art facilities to go with the state-of-the-art Cat Scan and MRI capabilities; an Army Wellness Center that is almost ready to open; and becoming the first Army medical treatment facility to become completely tobacco free.
“Most importantly, for more than 2,200 families, we helped them welcome a beautiful new baby to their lives, dozens of times using video teleconferencing [for soldiers down range],” Place said. “Amazing work by this team, I am humbled by your accomplishment.”
Place departs Fort Stewart for the U.S. National War College at Fort McNair in Washington.
Commanding General of the Southern Regional Medical Command Chief, Army Nurse Corps, Maj. Gen. Jimmie Keenan, who presided of the ceremony said she is looking forward to the work Eggleston will do.
“I’m so excited, while Ron is leaving, you are very fortunate to be getting Col. Kirk Eggleston. He is such a phenomenal leader. He is a proven leader. I expect him to not miss a beat here,” Keenan said.
The Fort Stewart MEDDAC includes Winn Army Community Hospital, the Warrior Transition Battalion, Tuttle Army Health Clinic, the Hawks Troop Medical Center, the Richmond Hill Medical home and the North Troop Medical Clinic, which is located on the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team campus.
