PAKTIYA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The Afghan 203rd Corps Engineer Kandak (CEK) successfully completed construction of the Afghan commando’s Tactical Operations Center (TOC), June 25, at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Thunder.
The new commando brigade has a mission set equivalent to U.S. Army infantry units. They focus on direct action, with missions primarily including raids, ambushes, and reconnaissance.
In order to effectively conduct combat operations, the brigade required a new and functional operations center. The commando leadership at FOB Thunder began designing the structure for their new TOC. Once the design plan was complete, the vertical construction company, or coy, of the 203rd CEK was assigned to the project.
“The TOC build was a great training opportunity for the vertical coy of the CEK,” said 2nd Lt. Henry Mackey, from Phoenix, Az., member of the Security Force Advise and Assist Team (SFAAT) to the 203rd CEK.
Phase I of the Commando TOC took approximately one month to complete. It included floor and wall framing, electrical fixtures, installation, doors, stadium seating with desks, and five complete offices surrounding the TOC floor.
“The completion of the vertical structure of the TOC served as an excellent tool to instill confidence in the soldiers of the vertical coy,” noted Mackey. “It allowed them to highlight their rapid development in engineer skills, and their future potential within the 203rd Corps.”
The next step for the CEK will be adding cosmetic additions to the TOC and declaring it fully operational for the new Commando brigade.
