GULFPORT, Miss. – Eleven sailors assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 11 helped the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, 2539, to complete some property improvements last week.
Utilitiesman 1st Class Mohammed N. Islam, originally from Keyport, N.J., led the NMCB-11 volunteers in painting the VFW building and making needed repairs to a portion of the chain link fence.
Islam arranged the improvements with VFW Dept. of Mississippi, State Chief of Staff Charles Purchner Jr. as part of the preparation for a larger coordinated pre-deployment fair event hosted by the VFW Post 2539 for NMCB-11 (event story to follow).
In addition to Islam, the following NMCB-11 Seabees voluntarily assisted in the improvements: Construction Electrician 1st Class Aishia S. Williams, Builder 1st Class Ina M. Baca, Equipment Operator 1st Class Leon A. Downes, Construction Mechanic 1st Class Roy E. Mihil, Construction Electrician 2nd Class Porfirio Pimentel, Builder 3rd Class Timothy J. Gonzales Jr., Logistics Specialist Seaman Tariq J. Selver, Logistics Specialist Seaman Sean T. Leverette, Logistics Specialist Seaman Robert D. Wallace, and Construction Electrician Constructionman Apprentice Manyara M. May.
NMCB-11 is a Seabee battalion specializing in contingency construction, disaster response, and humanitarian assistance. The battalion’s homeport is in Gulfport, Miss.
