FORT HOOD, Texas – As the nation prepares to celebrate its independence, the "First Team" took a few moments to honor great American heroes June 26 at the Fort Hood Catering and Conference Center.

"I welcome each one of you to our celebration of heroism and service," said Col. Larry Phelps, the 1st Cavalry Division (rear) commander, as the Purple Heart and Volunteer of the Month ceremony began. "Today, we are celebrating the heroism of our Purple Heart Medal awardees."

In celebrating their heroism, the First Team celebrated their valor, their courage and their sacrifice.

"Today, we also celebrate the service of our First Team volunteers," Phelps continued. "We tell them how blessed we are to have each and every one of them and their selfless service."

Following Phelps' remarks, Col. Loree Sutton, the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center commander, pinned Purple Heart Medals on the lapels of nearly 30 recipients.

"I cannot tell you what a privilege it is for me, as your hospital commander, to stand before you today – Soldiers, warriors, heroes, loved ones, volunteers – to recognize what you have done," she said during her comments after pinning the medals on the Soldiers.

"You have not sought this recognition," she continued. "My commitment to you is that we honor your sacrifice and your service in ceremonies like this, and also in the day-to-day. We aim to make our best better every single day."

Along with addressing the Soldiers, Sutton also addressed this month's volunteers for the selfless service and sacrifice they have shown for those around them.

"Volunteers, you have spent countless hours supporting this team," she continued. "And we are just that – one team."

"You are all heroes," she said addressing all recipients. "You don't see yourself as that, but you are our heroes. You have done something that few in our country have ever endeavored to do."
