CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Sgt. Maj. Roger Griffith took the reigns as regimental sergeant major for Combat Logistics Regiment 2, Regional Command (Southwest), at a ceremony here, July 25.

The Relief and Appointment ceremony marks the end of the deployment for outgoing regimental Sgt. Maj. Lanette Wright and the Marines of Operation Enduring Freedom 13-1, who will return to Camp Lejeune, N.C., and the start for Griffith and the Marines of OEF 13-2 who will serve as the Logistics Combat Element for CLR-2.

“I want to give the credit to the Marines of 13-1,” said Wright. “You’ve done a phenomenal job, continue to be successful and go forth and do great things.”

CLR-2 deployed to Afghanistan in January to provide logistical support to forward-deployed Marines and aid the transition of responsibility to Afghanistan’s people and the Afghanistan National Security Forces.

“I think a testament to the Marines and sailors out there are that senior leaders come up to me and tell me that we’re doing a great job,” said Col. Dwayne A. Whiteside, commanding officer of CLR-2. “We’re expecting to give the same service we’ve given in the last six months and not anything will change. We’ll have the same attitude, be unified and will execute brilliance in the basics because that’s who we are.”

Griffith, a highly decorated veteran with 21-years of military experience, will help lead the regiment alongside regimental commander Col. Dwayne A. Whiteside. He has served in multiple tours of duty outside the continental U.S. to include Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti, security operations in Liberia, and for OEF throughout the Horn of Africa and the Middle East, Fallujah in Iraq, and a prior tour of duty in Afghanistan.

“13-1… all the things you did out here, all your sacrifices, are not in vain,” said Griffith. “13-2… It’s time… time to put all your chips on the table and be all in and do your part. Whether it’s turning a wrench or driving a truck or clearing IEDs, the Marines have trained hard, and they’re prepared.”
