Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. - The recruits of Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, practiced using a map and compass during land navigation training July 29, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C.

This training is crucial should their electronic navigation devices fail.

This training is part of the recruits’ Basic Warrior Training week, which introduces them to rudimentary combat skills. Charlie Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 23, 2013.
