Story by Staff Sgt. Robert Barnett

    376th Air Expeditionary Wing

TRANSIT CENTER AT MANAS, Kyrgyzstan - The 376th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron is constructing a new Green Beans coffee shop next to Pete's Place at Transit Center at Manas, Kyrgyzstan. The construction project should be complete by Aug. 16, 2013.

This doesn't mean there will be another Green Beans on the Transit Center; the one in AAFES Town is effectively being relocated to this new location.

"The reason we're relocating it is to build a facility [in the AAFES town location] for the redeployment of war-ready materials," said Master Sgt. Daniel Wolfrum, 376 ECES structures superintendent deployed out of Minot Air Force Base, N.D., and a native of Defiance, Ohio. "By moving this Green Beans, we're going to allow Lt. Col. Robert Grover, 376 ECES commander, to draw down the base and get assets sent back to Air Force Central Command. This will be the last construction project we really do; everything else is going to be tearing down."

Start to finish, the project will have been completed in three weeks, Wolfrum said. It's the first big construction project since he has been deployed here, and the unit is taking advantage of the experience.

"This is my first deployment and first big project, so it's nice to see how everything works," said Airman 1st Class Larry Finch, 376 ECES structural engineer deployed out of Altus AFB, Okla., and a native of Aztec, N.M. "This is the first time I've ever done anything like this. It takes a little bit more thought because you're attaching metal with wood. We're using three containerized units for this. My goal here has been to learn more about doing big projects like this."

The containerized units for the facility took longer than expected to arrive at the Transit Center.

"They've been trying to get the service containers out here for months," said 1st Lt. Austin Fritzke, 376 ECES program manager deployed out of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, and a native of Dayton, Ohio. "Crossing the border from Uzbekistan to Kyrgyzstan was a big task; they got stuck at customs and were held at the border for a long period of time."

After driving through Afghanistan, the driver was able to successfully cross the border from Tajikistan into Kyrgyzstan. The whole process took months to truck the units back and forth.

"It feels really good because we were waiting, we had a plan and were ready to go," he said. "To see that plan come to fruition feels really good."
