KUNAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan- Commandos from the 1st Special Operations Kandak detained 28 suspected insurgents during a clearing operation Aug. 15 in Kunar province’s Khas Kunar district.

The SOK launched the operation to disrupt insurgent activity in the Shalay valley.

Afghan National Security Forces have irreversibly taken the lead for Afghanistan’s security, underscoring the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s Tranche 5, Milestone 2013 announcement this summer.

“We train very hard to ensure that we are an effective fighting force capable of providing security for our people and nation,” an Afghan National Army Special Forces commando said. “We respect our people and try our best to demonstrate that we are here for them, and this shows them just that.”

The detainees were transferred to the Khas Kunar district National Directorate of Security.

Afghan National Army Special Forces commandos are an elite group that conducts high-risk operations in remote areas known to be enemy strongholds. These counterinsurgency missions assist national and local police in their efforts to increase security, governance and development.

No civilians were injured, nor were there reports of infrastructure damage following the operation.
