TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. - Marines with Headquarters Battalion attended a pool party hosted by the battalion’s command and the battalion’s Family Readiness Office at the Combat Center’s Training Tank Aug. 8. The party consisted of a raffle, free food, inflatable obstacles and basketball in the pool.
“It’s important to have events like this pool party,” said Lance Cpl. Ethan Curnow, supply technician, central magazine area. “We don’t want all of our Marines to be sitting around in the barracks doing nothing and wasting time.”
The mission of the FRO is to facilitate two-way communication between the command, Marines, sailors and families regarding unit, personal, and family readiness information and requirements. The program is intended to enhance the morale and well-being of Marines and support the command by identifying certain concerns and providing recommendations for improvement.
Events like the pool party give Marines a chance to go out and socialize with other service members in their battalion.
The training tank atmosphere was transformed from its quiet lap swims to a party atmosphere. The music was constant and Marines were greeted with barbeque and beverages as they walked through the front door. As they swam in the pool, played basketball and climbed the inflatable obstacles, they also listened for their names to be called for the raffle, which gave water park tickets, packs of Gatorade and gift certificates for the Marines to use at the Marine Corps exchange.
“I think these events are good,” said Cpl. Mackenzie E. Smith, team leader, issues technician, central magazine area. “They help relieve a little bit of stress, build camaraderie and keep Marines.”
