KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Serving your country for liberty and freedom is not something everyone can say they do, but for Army Sgt. Margaret Kerchief, it is something she was destined to do. Kerchief, a Savannah, Ga., native, is currently serving in Afghanistan as a Warrior Recovery Center liaison, in Regional Command (South), Kandahar Airfield.
“I’m a military brat; my dad served for 30 years,” said Kerchief. “There was a lot of camaraderie in my family growing up; it was just something I had to go for, it just became a natural fit.”
For centuries, men and women have fought to preserve freedoms, but what is that driving force behind their commitment to serve? Kerchief said “What makes her strong” is her family.
“In my family, there is a lot of military history, so there is a sense of duty and patriotism; my family understands that,” said Kerchief. “I never doubt their support and I wouldn’t make it if I didn’t have them to rely on.”
Kerchief responds to all medical evacuations and documents all incoming patients at Role 3 Hospital at KAF, and the treatments they undergo.
“The best part about my job is seeing those troops that are bad off and how they pull through,” said Kerchief. “I see how strong they are; this job is one of the most rewarding you will ever have.”
