YOKOSUKA, Japan - The summer has officially ushered in over a month now, and with that comes the chance for Fleet Activities, Yokosuka service members, Department of Defense (DoD) civilians and their families to partake on some of the many outdoor activities and sites that can be found in Japan.

Some would like to sample the ocean by swimming while working on their tans and showing off their maintained physiques, and what way is more suitable than doing it from a beach.

Zushi Beach, which is approximately 25 minutes east of the base, is the closest spot to do both of the above.

“Going to the beach with my family is pretty relaxing and a way to get away from everything else,” said Interior Communications oElectronics Specialist 1st Class Petty Officer Christopher Auker, chief engineer, FLEACT Fleet Support Detachment Yokosuka. “I consider myself to be somewhat of an outdoorsman and whether it’s Zushi or any other beach in the country I have found that my time here has been an enjoyable experience.”

Zushi has strong winds and less waves, and because of this, hundreds of wind surfers and paddle boarders can be seen regularly.

Zushi can get crowded, and the water is a little dirty but it is bordered by tons of open-front shops and temporary beach huts that sell food and beverages, as well as surfing equipment, and outdoor clothing shops. Restaurants have patios and some even dance floors.

It is recommended for beach goers to bring a comfortable towel due to the beach being full of rocks.

Zushi Beach is also home of the Otodama Sea Studio, constructed in 2005 by local duo Kimaguren. This venue regularly lures some big name Japanese musicians such as J-Pop stars and even old school acts. Sundays are reserved for all-day dance parties while fireworks and mikoshi parades are regularly held.

While it is strongly advised to go out and experience all that Japan has to offer during the summer, service members,
DoD civilians and their families are encouraged to stay safe and respect the laws in place for not only the beach, but any other establishments.

Smoking is prohibited except in designated smoking areas. No dogs are allowed on the beach from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the bathing season. Barbequing on the beach is not permitted and remember to properly dispose of your liter. Loud noise and fireworks during the night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. is strictly prohibited.

Lastly, it is strongly advised to drink alcohol responsibly and do not attempt to swim after drinking.

“It is obvious that no matter where we are throughout Japan, we are ambassadors for our country,” said Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Capt. David A. Owen. “We as a collective group need to understand the overall lasting impression that we have the opportunity to leave on the host nation.”

To get Zushi Beach, take the JR Yokosuka line to Zushi Sta. Walk 10 minutes south, and you will run directly into the beach.
