YOKOSUKA, Japan - Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka Fleet and Family Service Center (FFSC) observed its inaugural Military Consumer Protection Day (MCPD) with an informational display booth in the Navy Exchange, July 17.

According to Tricia Marino, a personal financial manager at the FFSC, the Department of Defense partnered with the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) , the Military Saves Campaign and many other organizations to observe the first ever MCPD.

“(MCPD) is to let everybody know that there are organizations out there to help protect military members and their families from being ripped off by from unscrupulous business owners,” said Marino.

Marino said that there are a number of businesses that purposely go after service members.

“We have people trying to target them to refinance their mortgages,” Marino said. “Payday lenders are out there, specifically targeting service members, and some of these debt consolidation places out there aren’t looking out for the consumer.”

According to Marino, most consumers don’t take time to regularly check on their personal credit reports to ensure that someone else hasn’t stolen their identity and opened up additional lines of credit.
If a service or family member has a problem with any financial institution, they can get help via the CFPB.

“It’s really easy to get on their website,” Marino said. “If you have a complaint, you can submit your complaint on their site and they’ll investigate the things that are going on and they’ll get back to you to inform you of what’s going on and what recourse that you may have.”

MCPD highlights programs available to service members and their families year round to help them make educated financial decisions. No-cost services such as education and counseling services are available through installation personal financial management councilors (offered at the FFSC) and Military OneSource (www.militaryonesource.mil).

For more information about MCPD, visit their website at www.military.ncpw.gov. To find out more about the CFPB, go to www.consumerfinance.gov on the Web. To schedule an appointment with a FFSC personal financial counselor, call 243-3372.
