PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. - Recruits of Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, found the way through the woods of Parris Island, S.C., during land navigation training Aug. 19, 2013.
Recruits learn basic land navigation skills during boot camp, such as how to navigate using a compass and map rather than being dependent upon frangible technology, and build upon these skills at follow-on combat training. Recruits must show they comprehend navigation during final testing in order to graduate, as it is one of many basic military skills Marines are expected to know. Papa Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 13, 2013.
