JALALABAD, Afghanistan - Sitting outside on a slab of metal with more than 6,000 pounds of steel overhead acting as an oven in the 125-degree heat doesn't stop mechanics from keeping their Humvees ready to roll out on the next convoy.
Mechanics from Fusion Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, work 12 to 13 hours a day in those conditions making sure that the Task Force Rock's vehicles keep moving between their forward operating bases.
After the convoys come back from missions, they get dropped off at the motor pool at Forward Operating Base Fenty.
"The road conditions and (heavy) armor on the vehicle wears on the vehicles," said Army Pfc. Andrew Davis, a Fusion Company mechanic.
The convoys are only back on FOB Fenty for a day or two and all the maintenance on the vehicles has to be done in that short time span.
The mechanics work all-day and late into the night fixing vehicles and doing scheduled maintenance.
"When the mission is over, I get my satisfaction from knowing no one got hurt," said Army Sgt. Juan Velazquez, another mechanic in Fusion Company.
"When the vehicles roll out I know that I've done my job," Davis said.
