JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. – More than 2000 books donated by Blue Star Families were handed out to children of military families during the “Books on Bases” event here Sept. 7.

Books on Bases here was co-sponsored by Alicia Hinds Ward, 2013 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year, National Guard Spouse of the Year and co-founder of Joint Base Andrews Business & Community Support.

Jennifer Pilcher, 2013 Armed Forces Insurance Joint Base Andrews Spouse of the Year and founder of Military One Click and Michelle Vaughn of Blue Star Families and Air Force Sergeants Association Chapter 102 also co-sponsored.

“We all know that reading encourages a lifetime of learning,” said Hinds Ward. “We wanted to provide information and resources to parents, and help children as they transition back to school.”

Reading is instrumental in the lives of military children and volunteers and generous donations helped to make the event a success.

In addition to the 2000 books from Blue Star Families, there were 100 backpacks donated from Operation Homefront, snacks from USO Metro, face painting and book readings offered to participating families along with Sitter City, Tutor.com contributed during the event.

The Books on Bases event also helped to alleviate some of the stresses that parents can encounter as the school year starts.

“Many military families home-school and these brand new books allow them to expand their home reading library and prepare kids for back to school or just for some fun bedtime reading,” said Pilcher. “I’m ready to volunteer at the next one - there is nothing better than handing out new books to our littlest family members, who also serve.”

Since Books on Bases launched in 2009, more than 100,000 books have been donated to military impacted schools and libraries all over the U.S. The program was created by Blue Star Families to positively impact the lives of military children through the power of reading.
