NEW RIVER, N.C. - Sgt. Maj. Chris Bloebaum took over as the Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 29 sergeant major in a relief and appointment ceremony on the MALS-29 flight line aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River, Sept. 5.
The ceremony was more than Sgt. Maj. Thomas Sherwood’s goodbye to the squadron; the Marine with 25 years of service also retired from active duty.
“[Sherwood] has served in the air wing more than once,” said Lt. Col. Robert Wiser, commanding officer of MALS-29. “He has served multiple tours in the infantry, eight deployments — three have been combat deployments. He’s a former sniper, did a tour on recruiting duty. He’s done it all. And he’s done it very well.”
During his time at MALS-29, Sherwood has helped improve the readiness of the squadron by reducing driving under the influence offenses by 80 percent and other alcohol-related offenses by 43 percent, according to the citation for his Meritorious Service Medal.
Bloebaum has had deployments to Turkey and Iraq, served as a drill instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., and a sergeant instructor at Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Va.
Bloebaum is coming from Belle Chasse, La., where he served as the sergeant major for Site Support, Marine Aircraft Group 49, Detachment C and Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 773, Detachment A.
“I don’t know what MALS-29 is doing right,” said Wiser. “But somebody likes us. Sgt. Maj. Bloebaum, in the days that we’ve spent together, I already feel that you’re going to take [the squadron] to the next level.”
