ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A Defense Contract Management Agency St. Petersburg employee was honored with the Department of Defense Fourth Estate NAACP 2013 Roy Wilkins Renown Service Award. Michael C. Crosby, a quality assurance representative, was presented with the award at the Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Awards Luncheon during the national NAACP convention in Orlando, Fla., July 16.

“Mike is always leading by example at work and in his personal life,” said Pamela Daily, DCMA St. Petersburg Quality Assurance Group manager. “We can all learn from a man who has dedicated himself to both his work and community for over 40 years.”

Crosby said he was very excited and honored to receive this NAACP award. “I’ve been recognized before for my volunteer work, but this one is very special because it comes from my DCMA peers.”

The Roy Wilkins Service Award is named after a prominent civil rights activist in the United States from the 1930s to the 1970s. It recognizes military members and civilian employees who support the missions of the military services and whose attributes best epitomize the qualities and core values of their respective services or agency.

“My community service has helped me grow on a personal level, but it’s also helped me at work,” Crosby said. “Volunteering allows me to interact with people of many different backgrounds, and it’s helped me communicate better at work.”

The award citation states Crosby earned the award nomination at the DCMA and DOD agency level for “distinguishing himself through professional leadership, mentoring, role modeling and one-on-one counseling of over 500 African-American and minority youth and professionals in church, the workplace and neighboring communities. He has provided over two decades of tireless and dedicated service coaching, umpiring, and mentoring youth in local community activities. Many of these young men and women came from disadvantaged households.”

Army Lt. Col. Paul Mazure, DCMA St. Petersburg director, said Crosby’s “name and performance are synonymous with government quality as he consistently demonstrates professional excellence, insightful leadership and devotion to making sure the warfighters get what they need. His tireless work ethic has earned him a reputation as someone who will always get the job done in an exemplary manner.
