FORT BELVOIR, Va. - In the early days of the 20th century, the U.S. military began exploring the usage of aviation to support America’s troops. During World War I and World War II, that effort expanded, as the U.S. Air Force came of age with combat capabilities that led to its official formation as a separate branch of the military Sept. 18, 1947.
To commemorate this important and historic event, DTRA/SCC-WMD held a ceremony at the Andrew T. McNamara Headquarters Complex on Sept. 17 before a gathering of DTRA/SCC-WMD and DLA employees, military personnel and veterans.
DTRA Deputy Director Maj. Gen. Jay G. Santee and Defense Logistics Agency Director Vice Adm. Mark Harnitchek presided over the ceremony, while Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Cody served as guest speaker.
During the celebration, the Air Force Color Guard carried out “The Presentation of Colors” followed by the playing of the national anthem by the Air Force Brass Quintet, an invocation by Carl Young, chaplain, and a brief video highlighting the contributions of America’s Air Force.
Santee presented Cody with a token of appreciation for his participation in the event and, per tradition, the oldest airman – Maj. Gen. Santee - and youngest airman – Staff Sgt. Talvin Hayes – were invited to participate in a cake-cutting ceremony to acknowledge them for their service.
The program ended with a performance of the "Air Force Song" followed by a reception.
Honored guests attending the ceremony included retired veterans Richard Bader, Elizabeth Lloyd, Wilbert Logan and William Morgan from the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C.
For 66 years, our airmen have remained strong and vigilant with a deep commitment to America’s core values and beliefs.
DTRA/SCC-WMD salutes America’s airmen and their families for their courage and dedication to duty that protects our nation and preserves America’s freedom each and every day.
Aim High … Fly-Fight-Win!
