YOKOSUKA, Japan - Lt. Cmdr. John Heavrin, deputy intelligence officer for Commander, Submarine Group Seven, took third place in the inaugural Dobuita Street Arm Wrestling Tournament, Aug.25.

More than 300 arm-wrestling fans attended the tournament on Dobuita Street, a popular shopping district located just outside the gates of Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka.

Heavrin, who’s a natural lefty, finished the day at three wins and one loss, losing to eventual champion Kazuhirio Nagasima (4-0). Nagasima defeated Yuta Shinbori (3-1), of the Yokosuka City Fire Department, who finished second.

“I’ve been doing it [arm wrestling] for a lot of years, and it’s been awhile since I’ve competed in a tournament,” Heavrin said. “I just wanted to have some fun...and see how I placed.”

Ten Japanese and six sailors from various FLEACT, Yokosuka commands took part in the competition. The arm–wrestling tournament was right-hand only, men’s open weight class competition.

Navy Diver 3rd Class James White, from Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit 3 on Guam, currently temporarily assigned to the USS George Washington (CVN-73), participated in arm wrestling tournaments in Ohio and was once the 170-pound state champion.

“I heard that in Japan arm wrestling is a lot bigger, so I thought it would be a lot of fun to come out and arm wrestle with the Japanese and help to promote the sport,” White said.

White lost his second round matchup to Heavrin, the only all-American match, finishing the competition with a 1 – 1 record.
The tournament was the brainchild of Tatsuya Nakamaru and Satoko Chiba, of the Yokosuka City Economic Department, Commerce and Tourism Division.

“We are having a Dobuita Street merchant’s association campaign, and we wanted this [tournament] to be a special event,” Nakamaru said. “I hope this will become an annual event.”

The winners received shopping certificates good for 20,000 yen, 15,000 yen, and 10,000 yen (approximately $210, $158 and $105) to purchase merchandise from shops along Dobuita Street.
