FORT BRAGG, N.C. - The 82nd “Providers” Sustainment Brigade hosted an activation ceremony Sept. 27 on Wright Field to transfer command and responsibility to its provisional headquarters as more than 100 soldiers from its forward headquarters element prepare for deployment to Afghanistan.
During the ceremony, the 82nd Sustainment Brigade commander and command sergeant major, Col. Mark D. Collins and Command Sgt. Maj. Alberto Delgado, cased their brigade’s colors for the forward headquarters while the provisional headquarters activated by uncasing its colors.
Lt. Col. Joel E. Warhurst, commander, 82nd Sustainment Brigade Provisional Headquarters, and Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey M. Moses, provisional command sergeant major, will continue overseeing the brigade’s mission of providing sustainment support to Fort Bragg and its tenant units as the forward headquarters element deploys.
The brigade’s mission includes providing such support as rigging parachutes for airborne operations, getting supplies to troops at joint operational access exercises, providing fuel and water among many other major logistical support efforts.
“Today signals the final phased transition of authority as the Provider team at Fort Bragg fully takes the reins and assumes mission command of what is still the largest sustainment brigade in our Army,” said Collins during his remarks at the ceremony. “They are well led, trained and ready to continue operations.”
Collins also spoke briefly on the forward headquarters mission as it deploys for nine months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
While in Afghanistan, the brigade’s headquarters will assume responsibility as the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Recovery Element (CMRE), assisting in the facilitation of the transfer and closure of forward operating bases by processing and accounting for military equipment.
“The soldiers of the 82nd CMRE are equally up to the daunting and historical mission that awaits them in Afghanistan,” he said. “We are proud to assist in the redeployment of our forces and equipment from Afghanistan as the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan forces continue to lead efforts for their security and stability.”
Warhurst upon opening his first remarks as the provisional headquarters commander wished the forward command team well on its deployment while also highlighting the goals of the provisional headquarters.
“It is a humbling experience and a privilege to serve in this capacity, and we will give 100 percent,” said Warhurst. “We look forward to continuing the momentum of our lines of effort and training plans through fiscal year 2014 with eye towards improving our readiness and expeditionary capability. We as a unified team stand ready to support the entire Provider family.”
Other highlights from the ceremony included remarks from Brig. Gen. Wayne Eyre, deputy commanding general for operations, XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, and performances by the 82nd Airborne Division Band.
Approximately 2,100 soldiers currently serve in the brigade.
