NEW BERN, N.C. - The buzz of people, rides and the smell of freshly-cooked food will return to New Bern this year during Mumfest 2013.

    Now in its 33rd year, the award-winning festival will run Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Sunday 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase our city with all of this entertainment,” said Thomas. “We have something for everyone at this festival.”

The festival will feature free entertainment from live bands, magicians, street performers and artists. New entertainment this year feature X-Pogo, a stunt team from New York City.

Additionally, NASCAR is coming to the festival with an exhibit from the Richard Childress Racing Team showcasing three stock cars.

Swiss Bear initiated Mumfest in 1980 as a way to bring people back to the downtown area, said Thomas. Since then, the festival has grown every year and has now become a part of New Bern tradition.

This year more than 100,000 people are expected to attend.

“We greatly appreciate the community’s support and all the work the city, volunteers and area businesses put forth to support this event and help ensure its success,” said Thomas.

Bud Van Slyke, a volunteer at Mumfest, has been actively involved with the city of New Bern and Mumfest since retiring and moving to the city in 1997. Van Slyke has helped set up the event and has been in charge of volunteer efforts for the Mumfest boat show for the past 12 years.

“People look forward to this every year, and I’ve enjoyed giving back to the community all this time,” said Van Slyke. “It’s a good break from your everyday routine and gives families a chance to enjoy what the city has to offer.”

Thomas urges members of the community and families to check out this one-of-a-kind festival.

“This festival will offer something for everyone, is primarily free and is a very nice family event in a beautiful setting,” said Thomas.
