YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan - American Forces Network, Tokyo, based out of Yokota Air Base, Japan, is the main Department of Defense broadcasting hub in the Pacific, delivering news and entertainment to more than 300,000 people, covering 100 million square miles.

While connecting service members to the latest news and entertainment, AFN provides up-to-date information.

"We are the commander's voice. Essentially we disseminate important information and entertainment to the military community," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Wade Oberlin, the noncommissioned officer in charge of Eagle 810.

AFN provides important information to service members and their families during natural disasters, weather events, safety alerts and wartime situations.

There are four ways to access AFN - Eagle 810 AM radio, television, its official website and Facebook. One of the four avenues, Eagle 810, is one of the most popular radio stations in the Tokyo area.

According to Rusty Bartfield, the AFN Pacific deputy commander, Eagle 810 is considered a super station because not only is it received by Yokota residents, but it also serves seven other bases in the Kanto Plain region.

Live radio shows air from 6-10 a.m. and 2-6 p.m. The shows feature special guests, radio hosts with news and weather reports, music programming, and important messages from leaders such as the 374th Airlift Wing commander, Col. Mark August.

"We are here to serve the military community and to enhance peoples' experience here during their tours with the services provided," Bartfield said.

AFN is working to improve its capability to deliver news to its viewers every day.

Bartfield said AFN's audience can expect huge improvements in the near future. Advanced technology has allowed AFN to provide better entertainment and information to its audience.

The members of AFN are always on the lookout for stories. They travel down to Yokosuka, Camp Zama and other local areas to cover what is happening to keep service members and their families informed.

"We are honored to be a part of the community and feel connected to Yokota and the Kanto Plain," said Bartfield.
