FORT BLISS, Texas - Senior enlisted leaders welcomed newly promoted noncommissioned officers into the NCO Corps during a ceremony Oct. 8 in the 1st Armored Division museum at Fort Bliss, Texas.
The NCO Induction Ceremony is an Army tradition that dates back to the birth of the U.S Army. The ceremony symbolizes a change of responsibility; it develops and maintains unit pride, builds esprit de corps and preserves tradition.
The ceremony included skits illustrating the "Warrior Ethos" and the "NCO Charge," or the responsibilities of NCOs to their subordinate soldiers and the traditional lighting of three colored candles.
The red candle stands for the valor of an NCO, the white candles represent an NCO's purity, honesty and integrity and the blue candle signifies the vigilance and the field of honor in which an NCO serves.
With competence being their watchword, these NCO have strived to reach this goal.
“This is not something everyone can just do,” said Sgt. Timothy Cook, fire support specialist, Bravo 26 Field Artillery (Target Acquisition Battery), 212th Fires Brigade. “It’s not just handed to people, the fact that I achieved it in the amount of time that I have and the work I put into it makes me feel good.”
Each of the inductees were officially welcomed into the NCO Corps by passing under a pair of crossed sabers and were administered the Oath of the United States Army Noncommissioned Officer by Sgt. Maj. Franklin Jacobs, command sergeant major, 212th Fires Brigade.
