BALTIMORE -Tanya Tyson’s adventurous soul and need to serve have collided in a most interesting way. The property administrator came to Defense Contract Management Agency just three years ago, but has deployed twice since — once to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. She’s now hoping to return to Afghanistan to help the mission there finish strong.
Tyson has been serving her country for decades. She retired from military service and became a property administrator at Army Contracting Command, and continues today as a property administrator at DCMA Baltimore.
“Being retired military, I’m an adventurous soul and don’t mind traveling,” said Tyson. “I am used to moving around often, and coming to DCMA gave me the opportunity to continue serving my country, but in a different capacity.”
Tyson said deployments are opportunities to provide the ultimate support to the warfighter. They’re also a chance for her to do something extraordinary.
“You become a part of something bigger than yourself by working long hours in an austere environment, with the most professional people who give everything for what they believe in,” Tyson explained. “When you see the dedication of so many others, it encourages you to look beyond yourself.”
Professional challenges abound in the deployed environment. They provide lessons for Tyson who applies them to many aspects of her work. “Each deployment teaches me to not make assumptions about anything. Every situation is different, and you need to adapt and be flexible to be able to work through the challenges that come with it.”
Her experience makes her excited about the opportunity to help draw down U.S. forces in Afghanistan. It’s a mission with some familiar elements from her time in Iraq.
“We had a very challenging job to oversee the turn-in and disposition of all government property in Iraq,” Tyson said. “It was an extremely busy time and required long hours; however, it was satisfying to see the impact [DCMA] had on the overall mission during that time.”
She describes her time there as “a fast moving train” because the time seemed to go by so quickly. “It was one of the best and most satisfying experiences I’ve ever had, to see the moving pieces working together.”
An adventurous soul led Tyson to her first DCMA deployment, which was so satisfying she went again. “I returned because I know that what I bring will help make a difference.”
Tyson is hoping to be selected for another trip and to provide support during the last months of the agency’s mission in Afghanistan.
“Most importantly I’ll be a part of a special organization that provides the best service in the world to the ultimate customer … the warfighter."
