KARJAN, Afghanistan - The Afghan National Security Forces have committed to an ongoing security presence in the isolated district of Kajran in Daykundi province.

Afghan and International Security Assistance Force leaders traveled to Kajran to meet with district officials and locals and discuss the current security situation in Daykundi Oct. 22.

Maj. Gen. Abdul Hamid, commander, 205th Hero Corps, Brig. Gen. Abdul Raziq, Kandahar chief of police, and Uruzgan’s provincial governor, Amir Mohammad Akhundzada, were joined by Maj. Gen. Paul J. LaCamera, commander, Regional Command (South), during the visit to the district center.

Approximately 300 Kajran men attended the outdoor shura and were reassured that security in their district will be supported by the ANSF.

Maj. Gen. Hamid traveled with Brig. Gen. Mohammad Rasul Khan (Kandahari), commander, 4th Brigade, 205th Hero Corps (4/205), and while speaking with the Kajran locals said the Afghan National Army would have an enduring presence in the district.

“I wanted to see the situation here and discuss the security issues of Kajran personally,” he said.

“Uruzgan’s provincial governor is one of the most active governors in the southern zone and together with Brig. Gen. Kandahari we can solve our neighbors's security problems.

“Our ANA forces will stay in this area.”

Brig. Gen. Raziq also committed to assisting the joint police-army efforts in Kajran, which was well received by the district police attending the shura.

Kajran is a traditionally ethnic Hazara region and was transferred from neighboring Uruzgan to Daykundi in 2004.

The surrounding mountainous terrain isolates Kajran from the rest of the province, and persistent insurgent activity on the three main routes into the district further disconnect it from the nearby provinces of Bamyan, Helmand and Uruzgan.

This isolation makes it a safe haven for insurgents in the peripheries of the district as they attempt to use the routes, which are manned by police check points, for their own logistic purposes.

On Oct. 6, several Afghan National Police check points in Kajran were attacked by the Taliban.

Soldiers from 4/205 deployed to the area Oct. 7 and conducted a clearance of the Kajran-Gordak Valley, where several insurgents were killed or wounded before the remainder withdrew.
