The Carteret County Military Affairs Committee awarded Seaman Bobby C. Kieff Jr. the Service Person of the Quarter award Friday in Atlantic Beach.
Kieff was awarded for his desire to give back to the community through countless hours of volunteer work.
The Sailor was presented with the award by Master Chief Glenn Baxter, command master chief of the Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point along with the Carteret County Military Affairs Committee.
“I was very surprised when I found out about this award,” said Kieff, a hospital corpsman with the Naval Health Clinic. “The feeling of being recognized in this way is almost indescribable, it just feels so great.”
Kieff’s services have benefited the Naval Health Clinic at Cherry Point and the community by assisting with checking and treating pediatric and adult patients and by saving the installation thousands of dollars through training junior Corpsman in the proper set-up and execution of minor procedures, thus reducing waste of equipment and medications totaling more than $16,000 in savings.
The corpsman said he gives 100 percent effort in everything he does and hopes he can be an example to those around him.
“Kieff has volunteered more than 500 hours with the Cherry Point Young Marines Program, he was nominated two times for the Blue Jacket of the Quarter Award and he received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for 2013,” said Baxter.
The corpsman’s list of accomplishments extend far past his primary duties of working in the physical and occupational sections of the hospital and include working as the Single Marine Program representative for the clinic, the SMP treasurer, and the assistant safety representative for his section in the clinic. Kieff provided hands on training to at least five junior corpsman, kept accountability for medications and supplies and kept track of where money was being spent within his section as well.
Kieff and the two other award recipients were presented with their awards by members of Carteret County MAC. Local community members, organizations and small businesses showed their appreciation by donating gift certificates, products, tickets and cash. The service members recognized also received a letter of recognition.
“So many of the military personnel are far from home and it is encouraging for them to see that they are loved and welcomed in the local community,” said Diane Warrender, the program director for Carteret County’s Military Affairs Committee. “It is really important for them to see that they are appreciated by the community and this is just a small way that we can demonstrate this to them.”
“The way I look at it is, if you’re going to be in a community, why not be a part of making the community better,” said Kieff. “Volunteering is something easy that anyone can do. I can’t wait to continue working in the community.”
