YOKOSUKA, Japan - Nile C. Kinnick High School Lady Red Devils volleyball team American School in Japan (ASIJ) lost in four hard-fought sets, 25-16, 25-23 and 25-23 and 25-13 at Kinnick gym, Oct. 22.

After a rough start in the first set which resulted in an ASIJ win, the Lady Devils found their game and ran off the first four points in a second set that featured solid defense on both sides of the net before Kinnick finally pulled away 25-23.

ASIJ responded in the third set with the exact same score in their favor, and then pulled away for good in the fourth set to seal the victory.

“We had a lot of miscues and we still have people not showing up to the table,” said head coach Anthony San Nicolas. “We have to keep working hard. Overall, great team effort in front of a great scene tonight and the crowd was really energetic.

Kelly Osterbrink led with 23 assists. Audri Salter had 13 kills and Courtney Bacon had eight. The leader in service aces was Rhyssa Hizon with five. Defensively, the Lady Red Devils had Courtney Bacon and Audri Salter with two blocks each and Kaile Johnson added 10 defensive digs.

“I think that in the first set you could see that towards the latter half,” said middle blocker Audri Salter. “But during the second set, we got it together and played hard. In the third set, we kind of slowed down and in the fourth set, I really think we could have finished it off but, there’s always Far East.”

Salter felt that the team as a whole made several key mistakes which led to their downfall.

“I know that I gave away several points by miss-blocking but we always say that if we’re going to make up one mistake, we’re going to make a kill or an ace to correct it. Some of our passes and hits weren’t there, nor were some of our serves but, those are all fixable things. It’s not pressure or anything; I think that we can focus and keep that mindset we can be better.”

The Department of Defense Dependent Schools Japan Volleyball tournament is scheduled to commence Oct. 24-26 at Yokota Air Base, Japan.
