SINGAPORE – The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG 54) visited Singapore Oct. 26-31 for a port visit.
Antietam and her crew had an opportunity to visit the island city-state, located in Southeast Asia, to help foster friendships and give back to the people of Singapore.

"We are extremely grateful to have the opportunity to visit Singapore," said Capt. Tom Disy, Antietam’s commanding officer. "Our crew has really enjoyed experiencing the local culture and interacting with the great people that live here.”

During their time in port, members of the crew participated in a community relations project at Singapore City's Genesis School, a learning facility for children with special needs. After taking a tour of the school, the sailors tutored and played with the children, helped restore their playground, and shared cake with staff and parents.

One of Antietam’s sailors was inspired by the student’s perseverance over their disabilities.

“These children are all so bright and full of positivity, and I am so lucky to have had the chance to meet them,” said Logistics Specialist Seaman Fernando Mercader. “They refuse to let anything get in the way of their education and well-being; which is something I personally find very inspiring.”

The school’s principal and founder, Lisa Barron, was also very thankful for the visit.

“I cannot emphasize how blessed we are to have you all visit,” said Barron. “These kids love your company, and you are helping them learn valuable social skills and getting them out of their shell. Thank you for your efforts and you are welcome back anytime.”

Before departing Singapore, the ship hosted a damage control Olympics and tour for families from Singapore’s U.S. Embassy, as well as participated in a friendly basketball tournament with members of the Republic of Singapore Navy.

“This country is really special and I’ve enjoyed all my time spent here,” said Mercader. “I’m really looking forward to my next visit to Singapore.”

Antietam is on patrol with the George Washington Carrier Strike Group in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
