HUBERT, N.C. - If you have ever seen the television series “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” where a bunch of volunteers come together and completely transform a family’s home for the better, then you know it is not just the cool 40-foot-custom pool shaped like a guitar, or the bedrooms built like a cruise ship.
It is the hard-working family with a touching story that helps you understand why they are deserving of such monuments to human kindness.
Marines from Marine Corps Air Station New River and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune came together to do same thing, without Tyler Pennington and the crowd screaming “Move that bus!”
Twenty-six-year-old Derek Coble lives in Hubert, N.C., with his wife and son. Coble medically retired from the Army with an inoperable brain tumor making it difficult for him to do strenuous work.
That’s where the Marines stepped in and helped a fellow veteran in need.
Volunteers pitched in to help him, installing a pergola, flag pole, wheelchair ramp and more.
The renovations are part of Home Depot’s 3rd Annual Celebration of Service project, where the organization gathers volunteers to make renovations to a veteran’s home to accommodate their specific needs.
The Coble family did not request the renovations; someone called on their behalf and surprised them.
The renovations took two days, with separate groups of volunteers pitching in on both days. There were more than 20 volunteers who came together to make the renovations possible.
Selina Orozco, a volunteer, came with her Marine husband out of a love for volunteering.
“I heard about the effort and knew I had to help in any way I could,” said Orozco. “I loved how the Marines volunteered, even though they didn’t know each other, worked together like a team, to get all of the hard work completed and it looked amazing.”
Coble spoke on his surprise about the renovations.
“We were shocked,” said Coble. “My family and I feel blessed beyond belief. We weren’t expecting any of this; it’s a total surprise. I know how busy the Marines are and I think it’s awesome they are out here and we are incredibly grateful for all of the hard work the volunteers gave to make all of this possible.”
