TINIAN, Northern Mariana Islands - As the warm winds blow on the grounds of Tinian Junior Senior High School, students gather in the fields of the school for an opportunity not common to their classroom schedule.
Cadets from TJSHS Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps participated in a field meet with Marines and sailors at TJSHS field and track Nov. 22 to build companionship between one another. The Marines and sailors are with 1st Marine Aircraft Wing participating in exercise Forager Fury II, which is a joint exercise designed to employ and assess combat power generation in a deployed and austere environment.
“The Marines are here today to build camaraderie among the JROTC cadets and show them what the Marine Corps is all about,” said 1st Lt. Alex Cloninger, a motor transportation operations platoon commander with Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force. “A lot of them want to move on and join the military, so this is a good way to show them what it is. The cadets love the interaction and the Marines enjoy educating the cadets on the Marine Corps and what they do.”
The field meet consisted of six events including, military troop movements, a U.S. Marine Corps history lesson, a communications class, combat lifesaver course, logistical vehicle systems replacement overview, and modified combat fitness test.
The CFT was the favorite event by students due to its physically demanding nature and close interaction they received with Marines.
“It was fun but also very challenging,” said K.J Nabors, a cadet with the JROTC. “My favorite station was the CFT because I got to run the Marine’s course and I carried a Marine because my classmates were either too light or too heavy. With this event, I feel further disciplined.”
Retired Army 1st Sgt. Jose King, army instructor for TJSHS JROTC, saw a difference between last year’s meet and this year’s meet. He said he noticed cadets actively pursing Marines for knowledge and saw the participation of cadets was greater.
“I’m hearing from the students that they are having much more fun,” said King. “They like what they see and it makes them determined to see if they have what it takes to become a Marine. They’ve been asking questions all day about the Marine Corps. Last year cadets only did sports with the Marines, but this year they are also learning different skills.”
When Marines have spare time during FF II, they find ways to educate the community on the history and Es Spirit De Corps of Marines.
