NEW RIVER, N.C. - Junior Marines and noncommissioned officers (NCOs) of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 461 gathered at their hangar aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast provided, prepared and served by the officers and staff noncommissioned officers (SNCOs) of the squadron, Nov. 22.

“Each year we want to show our appreciation to the NCOs and below for all they do,” said Judy Robinson, HMH-461 family readiness officer. “It’s the staff NCOs and officers who host the event.”

Senior leadership rolled out turkey fryers and cooked 20 turkeys and 10 hams for the event. Officers provided desserts; SNCOs brought traditional Thanksgiving side dishes, such as green bean casserole, stuffing and seven gallons of mashed potatoes.

“This is a good way for them (NCOs and junior Marines) to know they are appreciated every day,” said Robinson. “It’s also a way to kick off the holiday season with the commanding officer at the front of the line thanking each and every individual Marine before they get their meal.”

Robinson explained that such events where officers and SNCOs come together to thank NCOs and junior Marines is a camaraderie builder and just one of many ways leadership can recognize their Marines for the hard work and dedication they put forth in supporting the squadron’s mission.

“It’s just nice to break bread with our co-workers and to enjoy a meal while sitting next to someone you’re not used to being around,” said Robinson. “Because the way the line is organized it’s from lowest to highest rank so they’re not actually sitting by someone they necessarily work with every day.”

Pvt. Grant Roanhorse, CH-53E Super Stallion mechanic, was the first Marine within the squadron to receive his meal and said if he had the opportunity to do the same thing for his superiors, he would.

“(Our leadership) doing this for us makes me feel special,” said Roanhorse. “It’s good to know that our (seniors) care about everyone within our squadron.”
