KEY WEST, Fla. - With the holidays rapidly approaching, Naval Air Station Key West’s Safety Department arranged a new way to approach safety training for sailors and civilian employees before the busy holiday season.
The Worker Integrated Safety and Health Committee set up the Safety Health and Wellness Fair at Boca Chica Field, Dec. 3.
“It gets younger sailors to actually learn about these different programs as opposed to sitting down watching a PowerPoint with no interaction,” said WISH Committee Chairman Master-at-Arms 1st Class Keshauna Hutchinson, from Atlanta.
“Instead of just doing PowerPoints, we decided that we were going to do a safety stand-down [fair] and get people’s interests back into the whole safety culture,” said Safety Specialist Rosita Bernhard, from Key West, Fla.
Nearly 400 sailors and civilian employees toured 14 stations arranged by WISH Committee volunteers.
“You get to move through the stations at your own pace,” Hutchinson added.
Safety fair attendees received training on suicide prevention, tobacco cessation, nutrition, sexual assault prevention and response, environmental protection laws, fire hazards, swimming guidelines, physical fitness and a first-hand look at simulated vision impairments through various intoxication-level goggles.
“Everybody seems interested. Everybody seems to like this a lot better,” said Hutchinson.
