YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea – The Chungju City soccer team visited recently and played a friendly soccer game against The Association of United States Army Korean Chapter at the Seoul American High School football in support of a good neighbor cultural and sports exchange program, Nov. 16.
The event was designed to enhance the relationship between Korean communities and U.S. soldiers. Not only did the event feature a soccer game, but also included taekwondo demonstration and a barbeque for lunch.
Col. Michael. E. Masley, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan, after the Taekwondo demonstration, then officially opened with his remarks by greeting the Chungju city team and emphasizing the importance of continuous efforts to strengthen the ROK – U.S. alliance.
“It is an honor and a pleasure for me to welcome you all today,” Masley said. “I expect fierce, and of course, friendly competition on the field. But more importantly, I hope for you to build friendships off the field as well. It is because of events such as today that build upon the concept of strengthening the ROK –U.S. alliance. It is also because of all of you that keep us ready and resilient for tomorrow.”
The main event began slow, but soon the players warmed up in spite of the chilly weather and each took their turns on the field. Both team showed professional sportsmanship and friendliness throughout the game despite Chungju City beating AUSA in a 2-1 victory.
“It was a fun game [to see],” said Lee U-jong, vice mayor of Chungju City. “Moreover, it was also pleasing to see Chungju City team members and U.S. Soldiers interact with each other through soccer. I truly hope this cultural and sports exchange program goes on, to let Korean community members be familiar with U.S. soldiers and to support the strong alliance between ROK and U.S.”
