FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. – Command Sgt. Maj. Warren Montgomery took the helm as the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade’s senior enlisted leader Friday during a change of responsibility ceremony at Fort Leonard Wood’s Nutter Field House.

Montgomery replaces Command Sgt. Maj. Federico Boyce, who was awarded the prestigious Legion of Merit shortly before Friday’s ceremony.

“I’m just happy to be back with the soldiers and the families of the Dauntless Brigade,” said Montgomery, who has previously served as the command sergeant major of the 4th MEB’s 5th Engineer Battalion.

Col. James F. Reckard III, commander, 4th MEB, 1st Infantry Division, pointed out to the gathered crowd that less than one percent of soldiers that join the U.S. Army rise to the equivalent ranks of Boyce and Montgomery.

Reckard shared fond memories of Boyce’s tenure as his senior enlisted adviser, including their joint vision of a brigade built upon a “bedrock of discipline” that was established over dinner at a command course in Kansas, but said the Army couldn’t have appointed a better replacement for Boyce.

Boyce, who will head to Hawaii to become the command sergeant major of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pacific Ocean Division, credited the support of the troops standing in formation as the reason for the 4th MEB’s success.

Montgomery joins the 4th MEB as the brigade continues its mission as a Defense CBRNE (Chemical, Radiological, Biological, Nuclear, and Explosive) Response Force. The DCRF consists of service members from all the military’s branches as well civilians from active duty and reserve units.

Before releasing the soldiers from the formation, Montgomery ended his speech with a succinct message:

“No mission too difficult. No sacrifice too great. Dauntless, life is good.”
