CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Marines and sailors from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, will partner with soldiers from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force to participate in Exercise Iron Fist 2014 aboard Camp Pendleton, from Jan. 23 to Feb. 24.
Iron Fist is a bilateral training event designed to increase amphibious capabilities and interoperability between U.S. and Japanese forces. Iron Fist 2014 is the ninth iteration of the annual training event, which began in 2006, and builds on the U.S.-JGSDF relationship that provides a unique opportunity for Marines to train with their Pacific ally on U.S. soil.
The exercise will include training in advanced marksmanship, amphibious reconnaissance, company and platoon-level operations, fire support and forward observation, and amphibious landing operations.
The JGSDF unit participating in the training is the Western Army Infantry Regiment. Marine units participating include 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines, and Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 161 among others.
