MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - For military dependents interested in pursuing a college degree, the commissary aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River is offering an opportunity to apply for a scholarship, sponsored by the Fisher House, to go toward a college education.
According to http://www.militaryscholar.org, the mission of this scholarship program is to help prepare military spouses for meaningful employment and to better contribute to their family’s financial security.
The scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees, and school room and board for various different types of higher education programs including GED programs, licensing programs, and vocational training.
“I feel proud to work for an organization that offers this program to military spouses,” said Pat Tourish, store director for the commissary aboard the air station. “The commissary provides a quality of life benefit for service members and their families and this is an excellent example of how closely the commissary works with the community.”
According to Tourish, scholarship selection is based on completion of survey questions which will help advocate for education changes on a dependent’s behalf, short-answer questions and an essay question.
“The entire process is easy and online,” said Tourish. “I encourage all military spouses interested in furthering their education to apply for the scholarship, because it isn’t available to everyone. You are competing amongst other military spouses for a program that isn’t offered to civilians.”
The deadline to apply for the next available scholarship is in February and anyone interested is urged to apply because the number of recipients is based on each individual commissaries number of submissions, said Tourish.
