TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. - Marines 1st Tank Battalion, Combat Center, joined members of the community in a golf tournament to raise money for the Toys for Tots program at the Roadrunner Dunes Golf Course Dec. 7.

The program provides the funding and support needed for successful, annual toy collection and distribution campaigns, with the primary goal of delivering a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters during the holiday season.

In an attempt to raise money for the program, Daniel Mintz, mayor of Twentynine Palms, put together the golf tournament in which Marines and community members could enjoy a day of golf while donating to a good cause.

“It felt good to be playing golf while knowing I was giving back to children less fortunate,” said Cpl. Levi Million, armorer, 1st Tank Battalion. “I think it shows the community we can work for our country in many ways; protecting it, and giving back to the community.”

Mintz coordinated with Mario Villescas, human resources officer with the Combat Center, to gather Marines and community members for the tournament which rose more than $1,000 worth of money and toys for the program.

“With Twentynine Palms being the host city to the Combat Center, we want to be able to do something good for the community,” Villescas said. “The Toys for Tots program is a wonderful organization, and it was great to be able to bring the Marines and the community together through giving back to those who need it.”

While bringing the Combat Center and the community closer together is important, it is also great to be able to put a smile on a child’s face for Christmas, according to Mintz.

Mintz and Villescas brought the remainder of the donated money to the base exchange to purchase gifts for the program Dec. 12.

“We had a great turn-out at the event,” Mintz said. “The great part about the Toys for Tots program is that there are unfortunate situations where kids normally wouldn’t get anything for Christmas, and just knowing the toys are going to kids in need is great.”

Anyone interested in donating can find drop-boxes located at the Marine Corps Exchange, or by visiting the Toys for Tots website at www.toysfortots.org.
