GARDEN GROVE, Calif. – In 2013, the United States Marine Corps selected 90 high school athletes from across the nation to participate in the 2014 Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl. The athletes selected were chosen based on their athletic prowess, academic success and embodiment of the Marine Corps values of honor, courage and commitment.
With more than 26,000 high schools in the United States, there was less than a .04% chance of having one player selected from any given school. Salesian High School, in Los Angeles, Calif., beat those odds. As the official roster of the bowl game was announced, Salesian was noted to have produced not one, but three All-American players. The odds seemed to be defied once again when it was announced that they were not only teammates, but family.
Rodney Carr, Jamardre Cobb and Marquis Ware, cousins and natives of Los Angeles, Calif., were all selected to play on the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl West team.
“We got selected to play together for this bowl game because we were all top prospects,” said Marquis Ware, a defensive end. “We work hard and they notice us. If you come see a game you’ll see all of us, not just one.”
The student athletes selected for the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl all exhibit a similar drive in that they all have more than outstanding athletic ability – they also exemplify youth leadership and are committed to building life skills both on and off the field.
“It took hard work and dedication,” said Cobb, a linebacker. “We try and give back to our community in our local area. We focus on helping out the kids by training them during our off-season. We try to be role models.”
According to Carr, more is expected from the boys because they are related.
“We push each other to just go all out,” said Carr, a cornerback. “If one is doing something, it pushed me to go out there and work harder. It’s great having them around. They support me a lot and I give them support. They are always there when I need them.”
This year, the three Salesian seniors were not only CIF-SS Northeast division football champions together, but they also all committed to the University of Arizona.
“We grew up together and played football against each other since we were younger,” said Cobb. “It’s just a great thing that all three of us could go to high school together and be All-American and now were going to college together.”
According to Cobb, the best thing about the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl is that he gets to play one more high school game with his cousins as well as meet more players from across the country.
“Even though at the beginning of the week we only knew each other,” said Cobb. “I am most excited to become brothers, one team, with everyone else.”
The 2014 Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl will be held on January 5, 2014 at 6 p.m. PST in Carson, Calif. The game will be played at the StubHub Center and aired live on Fox Sports 1.
