CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company held a town hall meeting aboard Camp Pendleton, Calif. Jan. 15.
The meeting helped families get a better sense of ANGLICO’s purpose and structure. It also gave families an opportunity to ask the commanding officer, Lt. Col. Brian Russell, and Sgt. Maj. Tracy Offutt questions.
“I had no idea what ANGLICO really was, and until I was able to sit down and listen to Lt. Col. Russell, I didn’t have a good idea of the structure,” said Candice Hall, wife of Maj. Bryan Hall, the platoon commander of 1st Brigade. “Now I have a much better idea of what ANGLICO does.”
ANGLICO had a unique way of ensuring everyone could access the meeting even from a distance. Using a life-feed, families could tune into the meeting from their homes.
“I just want to provide an opportunity for parents especially,” said Russell. “I think sometimes they get forgotten about in our family readiness program. Parents love their kids. They want to know what’s going on in their lives.”
Town hall meetings ensure families receive and understand accurate information.
“You never know how something is translated through a newsletter or e-mail, or how it gets translated through the Marines,” said Russell. “So I like to make sure that spouses and parents have an opportunity to engage.”
The meeting touched on ANGLICO’s structure, family services they provide, deployments and what to expect in the upcoming years.
Russell explained the Marine Corps is in the process of 'resetting.' However, even with things winding down, they need to stay ready. He believes in keeping the families informed as much as possible so they can be prepared.
“I’ll let you know what I know, as soon as I know it,” he said. “I talk about this forced resiliency and preparing folks ahead of time. Knowledge is power, if you know what’s coming up, you know how to prepare for it. That’s what I wanted to make sure I got across to the families.”
Families understand that at any time, their Marine could have to pack up and deploy for several months.
“That’s a bit nerve racking as a spouse,” said Hall, “because you start getting nervous every time the phone rings.”
If families know what ANGLICO’s mission is, it can help ease their minds while their loved ones are away.
“You have a better idea of the things ANGLICO gets involved in and responds to, and how that response might take shape,” said Hall. “Then, every time I turn on the news and see what’s happening in the world, I don’t have to panic because I have a better sense of what they might be doing.”
