CAMP MARMAL, Afghanistan – After a rewarding tour cut short by the drawdown requirement, Capt. Beth McCluskey is reflecting on a rewarding mission.
Her team provided critical medical care across the northern swath of Afghanistan and they grew close to their German counterparts.
Their mutual affection was on display last week when the team exchanged national flags during a casing of the colors ceremony to officially mark the end of the 848th Forward Surgical Team’s deployment.
“Our bond together with you has saved many lives and we are honored to have worked side by side with you here,” McCluskey said during the casing ceremony. “
McCluskey presented her German counterparts with a certificate to commemorate the event and capture the spirit of their time shared providing critical medical care.
“Let it be known that the mutual bonds of service, respect and camaraderie that our units shared will live on,” the certificate reads.
The 848th is being replaced by a much smaller unit that will simply conduct administrative tasks and leave the remainder of the more intensive medical care to the German contingent.
Regional Command North, headquartered at Camp Marmal, is a German-led coalition of nearly 20 countries worked to train, advice and support the Afghan Security Force’s on their pursuit of self sufficiency.
