MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Tax Center aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., opened Jan. 30 for active-duty service members, retirees and military spouses.

The volunteers, along with Col. John Farnam, commanding officer of MCAS Miramar, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the tax center.

The tax center has a team of knowledgeable Marines who were trained in December and certified by the Internal Revenue Service to file taxes free of charge. The tax center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. until April 15. The team also has a highly experienced civilian volunteer who is scheduled to be in the office Wednesdays.

“The Marines are relieved to be done with training and are very excited to put the training to use and start doing taxes,” said 1st Lt. Scott Crowley, tax center officer in charge.

The tax center is located at building 6275, which is next to base legal assistance. All patrons should bring their W2 forms, all tax documents, military identification card, social security cards, and account and routing numbers for their bank accounts. If the spouse is filing alone, they should also have a power of attorney.

“I would like to emphasize that this is a free service and is right here on base,” explained Cpl. Randall Webster, a volunteer at the tax center. “This is meant to alleviate the need to seek assistance in town, which can often times be very costly.”

Tax services are walk-in based and refunds should be returned approximately seven to 10 business days after filing. For more information call 858-577-1040.
